Why do we keep coming back?

Postby Drama Queen on Wed Jan 30, 2008 8:26 pm

Ok, I'm not sure that I'm asking the coaches this as much as I think I want feedback from fellow Crossfitters.
People hear me talk about Crossfit all the time with lots of enthusiasm and excitement along with a little dread. Maybe talking about how one of the Girls just killed me or the thought of doing Fran ever again is enough to think of suicide...
What keeps all of us coming back? I know I love all of the coaches and the people that workout with or around me, but do you think that's enought to keep us coming back to the hardest thing we"ve ever done??? During most workouts I can't wait to go home and think I'll never come back! JK
Just thought I'd put it out there...let me know what your reasons are!

OMG! Little Engine, I'm so glad to hear you say that! I still can't really get a good answer of my own...I just know that if I DON'T show up CoachB will be at my door! Might as well just get there myself!

Damn! Who knew that Coach B was a philosopher!

Comradery, Competition and Community...that about says it all.

Amazing thing this Crossfit. How many exercise programs can put you in the best shape of your life at age <11 days and counting>46? Nothing I've done, including competitive H.S. & college swimming, tri's, running, biking, yada^3 could come close to what Crossfit has done for me.

Tomorrow I'll go skiing. I'll know I can go 100% with no pain and, most likely, no injury. And Friday morning I'll wake up refreshed and ready to go again. Anything that lets me play harder is all good.

Arco. Great question!
Coach B absolutely the answer.
I have to add I come back for the emotions of it all, ( I know, I know, I am a girl, I am entitled!). Oh and for the fact I get to help other people go through the same torture... kinda like smelling bad milk, you turn to a friend, "eww this smells bad, here, smell it"... "Fran is horrible, here, it's your turn."

Name any emotion and I believe I have felt it;before, during and after CF workouts (and most times for the rest of the day). It makes me feel alive.
We walk through the door with drive and determination to get that personal record on something, but sometimes leave feeling disappointed. It's hard work, we come back, keep pushing and succeed.
We get to feel emotions for other people too and they for us. That's the COMRADERIE part, my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE part!

BECAUSE WE CAN. CrossFit is a community of people that once asked (and sometimes still do) WHY? And once said I COULD NEVER DO THAT but now are. We come back because after finishing 13 rounds of "Cindy" in 20 min you know you could get 14 next time. I don't want to stop and start talking about what I used to be able to do. I want to be 70, finish "Fran" (for the 100th time) in 3:30 and say I remember when I did that in 2:30! Then go visit all my friends in the nursing home who wish they did.

Danny, I like that! That makes me feel alive and well! I've come to realize that Crossfit is a lifestyle...and that lifestyle is positive to say the least! I've gone through a lot of s@&t in this life, and Crossfit has to be one of the best things I've got (along with my "origianal" family!). You guys are the best, and I'm glad to be a part of Crossfit Rockford...whether I know why I am or not! :D
I may not ever see Fran at 3:30, but I'll sure try again and again and.......

Because I can – that really was my answer, CoachD! I knew I should have gone first… :x

So, Because I can, and even if I can’t, my (somewhat) kind and generous coach looks me straight in the eyes and tells me I can - and I never used to think I could at all.
(and the feeling of that first great pull-up of the day).

And, truth be told, I also totally dig my new biceps!

3/12 - Today I'm pretty sure it is because I get to lift that big heavy bar over my head every once in a while - I love that, too!

6/21 - Maybe it's the ocean (maybe it's the corona's)... yesterday I realized just how much more "life" CrossFit has given me! I'm not the mom sitting under the beach umbrella reading a book, handing out snacks and playing the occasional game anymore... I spent more time playing with the kids in the ocean the last three days than I did in the last three years combined... needed this change of pace to see how much I have really changed in the last year and how it's impacted my family. Now the other mom's are mad at me - their kids want them to play in the ocean, too!

And, FosterB, the fact that we can actually consider ourselves "athletic" after all these years!

Why do we come back?

Postby MightyMurph on Thu Feb 07, 2008 9:07 pm

Wow Drama Queen, to actually put the question out there...good for you. It's been almost 6 months for me and I still can't describe the experiences I have in the gym to people. Being a "Rookie" wasn't always fun. Watching everyone and thinking I would never be there. Slowly I began to feel like part of the family and am doing what I once thought was the unthinkable for me. I come back because I like the power I am getting over my body, the control to do things I never could, and the absolute high I experience when I have reached another goal, like 25 pull ups!! Fran does scare the crap out of me, but I will face her one day and hope to God I live to tell my 6 kids about it at the dinner table. We come back because we truly love it!!!

Still trying to nail this question! Here is the last paragraph from an article in one of SBR's running magazines (which I enviously scan every month in the hopes that someday I, perhaps, will be a "runner") originally referring to a 2-man "running club":

"Will we continue? Will we go on? I heard a wildlife biologist talking on the radio just yesterday, discussing the herding of animals, saying that herding is a kind of hardwired, not at all intellectual, version of faith. Birds, for instance, don't know why they are heading south for the winter; they just are. It's the same with [Crossfit], and if we really start to think about it, we're dead. Instead, we think about the coffee."
